Having always been interested in purebred dogs and showing, in 1974 I acquired my first Italian Greyhound Am. Can. Ch. Chipwill's Great Expectations (Jack) and with this delightful dog my passion for the IG began.

After a hard day at play, any lap is welcome.

In general the IG is a healthy breed but some medical conditions which may occur in the breed are Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) which is an eye disorder, luxating patellas, hypothyroidism, epilepsy and Legges-Perthes.

As puppies and young dogs they can be fairly active, however as they mature their activity level will lower. For their safety I believe that a fenced yard is essential as this is a very fast and small breed who should not be left off leash.

The Italian Greyhound is very prone to disliking inclement weather especially the cold and will often require a sweater or coat in winter. They require minimal grooming, just needing an occasional bath and regular toenail clipping. I do not recommend the Italian Greyhound for families with young children.
